OGX Thick and Full Biotin and Collagen Sulphate Free Shampoo

Wednesday, June 10, 2015

If you have problems with itchy scalp, dandruff and hair fall, if your scalp gets irritated with harsh chemicals, then you must immediately switch to a sulfate free / paraben free shampoo. I have done it and trust me it had helped me a lot. The scalp is much healthier than before, and the dandruff problem that I had has subsided considerably. I am still in search for that holy grail of sulfate free shampoo easily available in Indian market, but today I am reviewing another product, by a very well known brand called the Organix. I purchased their thick and full biotin and collagen shampoo which fits my hair conditions perfectly. I have never tried any shampoo from Organix and always read positive reviews and when I came to know about this variant, I thought to give it a try.

Many companies now a days are venturing into making SLS/SLES free shampoos, but the substitute they use, are they safe at all ?

Before I start with the review, let me tell you my hair woes. Due to hormonal problems and other medications I had lost almost all of my hair, my hair is very thin and I required a shampoo which would make my hair look thick and fuller and also has to be sulfate free as my scalp just does not like sulfates and it reacts to it.

The product claims to have an unique blend of sulfate free surfactants to create thicker, fuller looking hair. After just one use, strands feel thicker and look fuller and more adundant. Helps to thicken and texturize any hair type. Immerse your skinny strands in this super volumizing formula to create fuller looking, shiny hair after just one use.

In the ingredients list, Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate has been used as the primary surfactant, and what my research tells me is this compound is potentially drying and irritating for skin. The correct formula while using this compound becomes too tricky as this is very unstable. This has not been given a good choice as surfactant is many websites. Cocamidopropyl Hydroxysultaine is again a foam boosting agent and had allergic reaction on human subjects. Again what I am not so thrilled about, is the presence of Dimethicone, a silicone. This coats strands and make it look shiny but damages hair in the long run. I believe that the silicone is used to coat Biotin, collagen and other proteins present in the ingredients list to the hair strands and make the strand look thicker. A good thing from the ingredients list though is this is PARABEN free.

I definitely love the packaging, it's a cute bulky purple bottle with a brown flip open cap. Squeeze the tummy of the bottle to pour out the shampoo. If  you want to travel light then this is not travel friendly, but it sits pretty in my bathroom cabinet and I like the look of it.

The shampoo is a pale purplish in color, has semi gel / runny consistency and has a nice scent. I never use shampoos directly on to hair, I always dissolve it in a bit of water. The quantity that you see on my palm, I take double the quantity and dilute in water and message it on the wet scalp with finger tops. It lathers a lot and removes oil very effectively in the first wash. The after shampoo feeling is just as any regular drugstore shampoo. It does not give that light and squeaky clean scalp feeling after wash. This is probably because of the silicone. The silicone just stays behind on scalp and hair after wash. If you observe your strand very carefully before and after wash, and I am saying this after observing my hair strand before which was devoid of any silicone or harsh chemicals containing product, and after using this shampoo, the hair strands does feel a wee bit thicker. So it does make your hair look thicker. if you have very very thin hair, do not expect this shampoo to give you thick and lustrous mane and but it would boost up the volume a bit without making it look frizzy. It did not help in any hair fall control whatsoever. I have an extremely irritable scalp, it did cause a little itchiness and irritation. It does not come cheap, so I expected it to contain less irritable ingredients and definitely not silicone.

Price : Rs 725 for 385 ml.

Overall, if you are someone who does not bother about silicones and sulfates and use a lot of harsh chemicals like coloring / rebonding etc on your hair, then you would definitely like this shampoo. Because the shampoo does what is claims, it does make hair look shinier and make it look healthy. But it does not make hair healthy. Just as the bottle claims, it creates the appearance of healthy hair. I have not used any conditioner after using the shampoo and my hair was looking quite shiny and that is because of silicone. If you are someone who is very choosy about chemicals you decide to put on your hair or skin like me, then you would definitely not like this. I would not recommend this to you if you are some one like me. I think I would be going back to my safe shampoo till I find a SLS/SLES free formula which is actually not harmful and irritable to skin.
